What Is ECU Remapping?
Your engine control unit manages functions such as fuelling, ignition timing, boost pressure and throttle response. Remapping adjusts selected settings to suit the vehicle, its hardware and how it will be used.
The vehicle should be checked for relevant faults and mechanical problems before tuning. Optional rolling-road testing is available at our Weston-super-Mare workshop where appropriate.
Stage 1 or Stage 2 Remapping?
The correct tuning stage depends on your vehicle, its condition and any modifications already fitted. The table below explains the usual differences.

How petrol and diesel engines respond to ECU tuning
ECU remapping is available for compatible petrol and diesel vehicles, although the calibration approach differs according to the engine, transmission and intended use.
On turbocharged petrol engines, tuning may adjust boost pressure, ignition timing, fuelling and torque management. Diesel remapping commonly focuses on boost, fuel delivery and usable low-to-mid-range torque. The available options and expected results depend on the individual vehicle.
Relevant faults and mechanical problems should be addressed before tuning. Our Weston-super-Mare workshop provides ECU remapping with optional 4WD rolling-road testing, while services and equipment vary across the independent MET agent network.
Stage 1
STAGE 1 ECU TUNING
Stage 1 ECU remapping is generally intended for mechanically standard or lightly modified cars and vans. The vehicle should be checked for relevant faults and mechanical suitability before any calibration is applied.
Where appropriate, Stage 1 tuning can improve throttle response, usable torque and power delivery without requiring performance hardware changes. The available calibration and expected result depend on the engine, transmission, fuel and condition of the vehicle.

STAGE 2
STAGE 2 ECU TUNING
Stage 2 ECU remapping is intended for vehicles fitted with suitable supporting modifications. The required hardware varies by vehicle and may include changes to the intake, exhaust, intercooling or other performance systems.
Before tuning, the vehicle’s modifications, mechanical condition and current setup must be reviewed. The calibration can then be matched to the installed hardware and intended use.
Not every vehicle or combination of modifications is suitable for Stage 2 tuning. Please contact our Weston-super-Mare workshop before booking so the team can confirm the requirements for your vehicle.
STAGE 3
STAGE 3 ECU TUNING
Stage 3 tuning is intended for extensively modified performance vehicles. These builds may include larger or hybrid turbochargers, upgraded fuelling systems, revised intake and exhaust components, and other supporting hardware.
Every Stage 3 project requires an individual assessment. The vehicle’s specification, mechanical condition, intended use and supporting modifications must be reviewed before the calibration work can be confirmed.
Custom development and rolling-road testing may be required at our Weston-super-Mare workshop. Power output and project timescales vary, so please discuss the vehicle with our technical team before booking.

Does ECU remapping increase power?
ECU remapping can increase power and torque on compatible vehicles by adjusting selected engine-control settings. It may also change throttle response and how power is delivered across the rev range.
The available increase varies according to the engine, transmission, fuel, existing hardware and mechanical condition. Exact results cannot be confirmed from the vehicle model alone. How long does ECU tuning take?
The time required depends on the vehicle, ECU type, programming method and work requested. A straightforward remap may be completed during a single appointment, while some vehicles require additional access, testing or technical investigation.
Modified vehicles and custom tuning projects may take longer, particularly where rolling-road testing or calibration development is required. Please confirm the expected timescale when booking.
Is ECU tuning safe for my engine?
That depends on the condition of the engine, transmission and supporting components. ECU tuning cannot correct existing mechanical faults, and increasing torque may place additional demand on parts such as the clutch, turbocharger, cooling system or gearbox.
Relevant warning lights, fault codes, unusual noises, fluid leaks or driveability problems should be investigated before tuning. A vehicle is not automatically suitable simply because a calibration is available for its model.
If the vehicle is not considered mechanically suitable, the technician may recommend repairs or further investigation before proceeding. Customers should also maintain the vehicle correctly and consider any insurance or warranty requirements.
